Who Can Do Chair Yoga?
“Anyone can do it!”  Men as well as women.  Chair yoga can benefit you whether you are a beginner who wants to start yoga slowly, out of shape, young or old, overweight or averse to gyms. It is also beneficial for most health problems or concerns in any one area of your body, or to gently help your body strengthen and recover from an illness or surgery. Remember to always check with your physician before starting any exercise program.

What is Chair Yoga?
Chair yoga is the term generally used to describe a gentle form of yoga that is practiced sitting in a chair or standing, using a chair for support.  Chair yoga gives you the benefit of relieving stress and gentle stretching of muscles and joints.  With the use of this type of yoga modification, it helps to make yoga easier if you have physical limitations in balance, flexibility, or strength. Yoga is not about trying to twist your body into a pretzel.  It is meant to gently stretch and bend the muscles and open air flow with the breath. Whether you are doing classical yoga or chair yoga, you will leave class with a calmer state of mind and a more resilient spirit.

Benefits of Chair Yoga

Chair yoga as well as classical yoga is considered safe. Studies have shown that yoga helps people with the symptoms of many health issues including:

  • hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • manage stress, anxiety, clinical depression
  • fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue syndrome
  • arthritis
  • insomnia
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • chronic pain

Well… what can I eat? Healthy Choices in the Modern World.

One month the media says it’s all about the carbs if you want to lose weight. Next week Dr. Oz says to eat organic leafy vegetables. Last year everyone said High Fructose Corn Syrup is poison but someone on the news said it’s the same thing as table sugar. Diet soda or regular? Coffee or green tea? Whole grain or no grain?

It seems every couple of months there is a new study or new expert championing the next holy grail of health. Come find out what foods to avoid, which ones to consume, the best times to consume them, and how to decipher a food industry that is “selling health” at the expense of your own.

Free Workshop about Chiropractic at the Library!

The Aston Public Library will host a free workshop with Dr. Kevin Wilkins, a local Chiropractor, on Saturday, April 16th, 2011 at 11AM-

When is chiropractic the right choice for me?

The rebirth of chiropractic happened in 1895 in Davenport, IA. Prior to that however, chiropractic under the name “bone setting” existed for well over 2000 years dating back to ancient Greece, Egypt, India, China, and middle-ages Europe and beyond. Obviously the methods of examination and treatment have changed, but the philosophy is still the same: gentle adjusting of the joints of the body (usually spine) to treat common ailments. Conditions that benefit from chiropractic care are neck pain, headaches, mid back pain, shoulder pain and stiffness, jaw pain (TMJ), low back pain, fibromyalgia, fatigue, and anxiety. But chiropractic isn’t for everyone. Some people need other types of care that we do not provide. Come find out if chiropractic is the right choice for you, your spouse, or your child and why Hippocrates said, “Look well to the spine for the cause of disease.”

Free Posture and Pain Workshop at the Library!

The Aston Public Library will host a free workshop with Dr. Kevin Wilkins, a local Chiropractor, on Saturday, March 26th, 2011 at 10AM–

Posture and Pain: Why does my neck and back hurt?

Abnormal posture creates abnormal stress on the bones and ligaments of the neck and back. The muscles spasm in order to bring stability to a spine that has been damaged by one traumatic event (car accident or fall) or a series of sustained repetitive traumas (computer use, office work, video games etc). The result is a variety of muscle and ligament disorders including neck pain, headaches, mid back pain, shoulder pain and stiffness, jaw pain (TMJ), low back pain, fatigue, and anxiety. The posture, however, is most often the root cause of these maladies. Come find out what normal posture looks like, how poor posture occurs, and what you can do end a lifetime of pain.
