Who Can Do Chair Yoga?

“Anyone can do it!”  Men as well as women.  Chair yoga can benefit you whether you are a beginner who wants to start yoga slowly, out of shape, young or old, overweight or averse to gyms. It is also beneficial for most health problems or concerns in any one area of your body, or to gently help your body strengthen and recover from an illness or surgery. Remember to always check with your physician before starting any exercise program.

What is Chair Yoga?

Chair yoga is the term generally used to describe a gentle form of yoga that is practiced sitting in a chair or standing, using a chair for support.  Chair yoga gives you the benefit of relieving stress and gentle stretching of muscles and joints.  With the use of this type of yoga modification, it helps to make yoga easier if you have physical limitations in balance, flexibility, or strength. Yoga is not about trying to twist your body into a pretzel.  It is meant to gently stretch and bend the muscles and open air flow with the breath. Whether you are doing classical yoga or chair yoga, you will leave class with a calmer state of mind and a more resilient spirit.

Benefits of Chair Yoga

Chair yoga as well as classical yoga is considered safe. Studies have shown that yoga helps people with the symptoms of many health issues including:

  • hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • manage stress, anxiety, clinical depression
  • fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue syndrome
  • arthritis
  • insomnia
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • chronic pain
  • poor circulation
  • relieves stress ,tension in neck, shoulders, torso and legs.
  • gain strength, flexibility and balance
  • digestion
  • osteoporosis – helps stop bone loss or increase bone density
  • well-being feeling
  • breathe easier
